Why Wind?
Environmental Benefits

The Redington Wind Farm will prevent more than 800,000 pounds of pollution from being released every day by existing plants in New England. It is the equiv-alent of taking 26,000 cars off the road permanently.
  • 50,000 gallons of oil would have to be burned every day to create the same amount of power.

  • Where do you want your power to come from? By embracing the Redington Wind Farm we have an opportunity to leave our world a little better off than we found it - and position Maine as a leader in renewable energy.

  • As part of the area's "working forest" the Redington Wind Farm parcel will remain open land, helping to prevent further development in the area.

  • A recent statewide poll found that 77% of Mainers think electric regulation laws should be changed to reduce our dependence on foreign oil.

Local Economic Benefits

Redington Wind Farm will bring real economic benefits to the region:
  • The $150 million Redington Wind Farm project will contribute approximately $500,000 in annual taxes to the state and local economy.

  • It will create approximately 100 jobs during its year-long construction. These workers will stay in area hotels, dine in local restaurants and make a major contribution to the area's economy. An emphasis will be made on hiring local employees.

  • After construction, there will be about 5-10 direct permanent jobs at the facility. Maine Mountain Power is committed to hiring and buying supplies locally whenever possible.

  • The Redington Wind Farm will conduct regular visitor tours that will help support the local recreation and tourism-based economy.

  • Best of all, the Redington Wind Farm will give preference to local towns, hospitals and schools in the area to purchase the electricity produced at the facility. The power will be sold in 10-year fixed price contracts, providing a more stable energy supply than the power produced by traditional fossil fuel plants.

Recreational & Community Benefits

  • Over 900 acres of land will remain available to local hikers, skiers and snowmobilers.

  • Being a good neighbor is one of the Redington Wind Farm's highest priorities. We plan to contribute to low income weatherization programs and work with area schools and recreation associations.
Visibility

  • The wind farm will be visible from Sugarloaf, from points on the Appalachian Trail, logging roads and snowmobile trails, and from Route 16.

  • The wind turbines are placed on 200 to 260 foot tall tubular towers. Three 115 to 150 foot blades on each turbine will rotate at a leisurely 9 to 19 rotations per minute - about once every four seconds.

  • Most people find wind farms pleasing because of their aesthetic value and because they exemplify working in harmony with nature to meet human needs and solve environmental problems.
